Neither Mozart nor the couple talking to the belly: babies do not hear anything from outside

Am I the only one to discover this is sad? We have been thinking for years that babies can hear from our womb the music we put on them, and even the voice of the same mother, or the couple, and now it turns out not.

There were those who recommended that classical music, Mozart, be put on to be more concrete, because babies would be smarter and born calmer; There were those who recommended that the couple speak to the baby so that, from the inside, the baby would know his voice. And now it turns out that, as they say in an investigation, babies don't hear anything from outside.

They do not respond to the voices of the couple

As we read in Europa Press, a study carried out by the Marquès Institute in Barcelona, concludes that Babies do not react to voices or music coming from outside, although they do if the sound reaches them through the vagina.

The study was recently presented at the 26th Congress of the International Society of Ultrasound in Gynecology and Obstetrics, in Rome, and shows that babies do not execute any response when the voice of couples arrives from outside, apparently because the uterus , together with the amniotic fluid, soothes the sound so that the baby hardly reaches it.

Now, if the sound is emitted intravaginally then the baby does make a response, which is even different depending on what he is hearing. Apparently, from week 16 of gestation, 70% of fetuses move their mouths when they receive the sound of a human voice, Y 87% also move their tongue if what they hear is music.

This reaction difference is explained by considering that different sounds activate different brain circuits.

Now the differences between those who receive stimuli and not receive them will finally be known

Realizing that the sound from outside reaches them so muffled that they do not perceive it, the researchers open the door to a line of research that can really establish the differences between fetuses who receive acoustic stimulation during pregnancy and those who do not receive They also consider starting a screening of deafness That could also be done before birth.

This, of course, can only be done with those women who deliver the sound of their voice or music intravaginally, and this is by introducing a device that emits sound into the vagina.

Do you really hear nothing at all?

Well that seems. It is true that it was said that babies who listened to music in pregnancy were then able to remember the music they had already perceived, as if it calmed them by the fact of hearing it again. However, last month we presented a study done with musical stimulation belts (pregnant belts that emit audio) and they saw that the baby could barely hear any of the sound emitted, to such an extent that the researchers suggested that it was better for the mother to sing.

Now, according to the present study it seems that not even the mother's voice clearly reaches the baby, so although it is believed that something may be heard, the sound comes so muffled that it does not help much.

A device to get the sound

Following the study, and as Eva explained almost a year ago, a company decided to market the same device that was designed to do the research.

Its name is BabyPod and can be purchased for € 149.95, promising as the only way to get voice and music to the baby and start development.

So here the question is: if babies don't hear anything in the womb until they are born, isn't it for something? I mean, won't it turn out then that we were wrong and that the best thing is that they don't have auditory stimuli from the outside for some reason? I say this because as we do not know what is the benefit of putting music and talking to the baby before birth (we thought it was positive to put music and talk from outside, but if they do not hear, the conclusions that were had about it were wrong), We do not know if there can be any damage until the corresponding investigations are done.

In this regard, what we do have is a meta-analysis, published this month, which has analyzed the studies related to music therapy in premature newborns and that he has only been able to conclude that It is early to position yourself for or against because with the studies that have been carried out so far, clear evidence cannot be achieved. Although, everything must be said, they suggest that the results seem to indicate that music could be beneficial For these babies.
