Precautions when sleeping in bunk beds

Although children love them, the bunk beds they involve certain risks: the child who occupies the upper berth may fall, and the child who occupies the lower can suffer injuries if the upper berth collapses.

Bunk beds may be designed or mounted incorrectly, causing dangerous structural mismatches. Or, if the mattress does not fit well enough, the child could get caught.

If, despite these warnings, you decide to use bunk beds in your children's room, we suggest you take the following precautions:

  • Place the bunk beds in a corner of the room, so that it is against two walls. This way you will get a better grip and block two of the four sides where the falls could occur. On the other two sides, place safety railings.

  • Do not let a child under the age of six sleep in the upper bunk. You will not have the necessary coordination to get on and off safely or avoid falling.

  • The mattress of the bunk bed must fit well to the bed so that the child cannot fall into the gap between the bed and the bunk frame, being able to get caught and / or suffer suffocation.

  • Place a ladder to ascend to the upper bunk. At night, leave a light bulb that illuminates the stairs.

  • Check the condition of the supports that support the upper bunk mattress. The bars or slats should go directly under the mattress and be well held by both ends. A mattress that rests solely on the bunk frame or loose supports could collapse on the lower bunk.

  • If you convert the bunk beds into two single beds, check that no nail, pin, screw or the like is loose.

  • To avoid possible falls or crashes, do not let children jump or roll over any of the bunk beds.

Bunk beds save space in the children's room and a wide variety of models, combinations and sizes can be found on the market. Pay special attention to the resistance offered by the material and the treatment of the paint before purchasing one.
