Ecological menus in the schools of Galicia

For two years the Regulatory Council of Ecological Agriculture (CRAEGA), which depends on the Ministry of Rural Environment of Galicia, promotes organic food in the community canteens in order to offer healthy food to children.

According to CRAEGA, the goal is for children to have a healthier diet and that "It is proven that children who eat organic food for years recover better from diseases and suffer fewer colds".

So far there are few schools that bet on these menus. Only ten centers have joined this campaign although the Xunta expects to increase the number this year as this new campaign begins this January. "Those who are interested should contact us. At the moment, they have already called a dozen schools but we receive requests every week. We hope to bring the ecological menus to about 50 centers", indicate sources of CRAEGA.

The food offered to schoolchildren they are products without any chemical component and whose cultivation has been carried out respecting the environment and soil fertilization. Healthy and land foods that come from their Galician lands.

The campaign, whose name is Eco-lexicon, does not only consist of food and knowledge of these products via dining room but also specialized talks and workshops are held for all those children who do not use the dining room service in which they try to promote education food, improve the health of children and promote rural development and environmental care.

Undoubtedly it is a more than successful campaign to promote healthy eating, learn about the processes of cultivation, collection and transport of organic food and in parallel with the "non-ecological" and to raise awareness of the need for children better treatment of the land where they live and their own bodies.
