ID and passport for the baby: what documents we need

Following one of the questions you have left in our new Answers section on the processing of ID and passport for the baby, we will detail what documents do we need to perform both procedures.

First, it should be clarified that the processing of the DNI It is not mandatory for children under fourteen, while the passport is the document that proves identity outside of Spain.

Both to process the ID and the passport you must make an appointment. To that appointment the child must come (except chronic illness or disability) accompanied by the person exercising parental authority or guardianship. Although if they are very babies they do not take their mark, as vickitoria tells us, they do confirm that the baby is the same as the one in the photo.

The first procedure that you must perform after birth is to register the child in the Civil Registry. This registration is a necessary preliminary step for the processing of the DNI and in case of not having a DNI, also for the passport, since it is one of the documents that must be provided.

Documentation needed to process the DNI

For the first ID card of those under fourteen, it is necessary to carry:

  • Literal birth certificate issued by the Civil Registry. Or if it is the case, certificate of registration of the Spanish nationality, a document that clarifies that it is issued only to obtain the DNI.
  • Color photo with white background of baby's face
  • Certificate of registration issued with a maximum advance of three months, as Marta Torralba reported in the replies.

Documentation needed to process the passport

It is necessary to go the day of the appointment contributing:

  • DNI of the minor, if you have it. In case of not having it, it is mandatory to provide a literal birth certificate issued by the Civil Registry and ID of the person exercising parental authority (NIE in the case of foreign parents)
  • Color photo with white background of baby's face
  • When the trip is urgent and does not give time for the issuance of the birth certificate, a type B passport (with three or six months of validity) is issued. To do this, you must present ID of the person exercising parental rights or guardianship, family book or resolution of attribution of guardianship, as well as proof of having requested the literal birth certificate.
