Stories with pictograms, his first "readings"

Pictograms are drawings that we can substitute for the word referring to what they represent when reading a text. In other words, a written text can substitute some words for the pictograms, cartoons that children know how to "read".

When we read this text with pictograms in front of them, they are better able to continue reading and it is they who complete the text if they correctly identify the pictogram.

My oldest daughter loves to play with these books to finish the sentences, and sometimes she even encourages herself to make her first "readings", following the text with the support of the drawings, although obviously it is a very particular version.

Some storybooks with pictograms incorporate at the end a glossary with the legend of the drawings, the "translation" to the word fair, although many times we can play with the variants, synonyms ... and sometimes very funny readings come out.

The use of pictograms as we see can be playful, and in the field of pedagogy it is a support technique for reading, and may be of great interest to many fields of language and literature teaching or Special Education.

Let's see the possible benefits of using pictograms:

• Improve attention and motivation.

• Simulate situations through scenes, murals ...

• Support certain oral and written expression skills, automating and memorizing them.

• Help reading comprehension, giving thematic clues through illustrations of setting, graphic organizers, pictures, etc.

• Help build concepts and relationships between concepts.

• They visually represent verbal and / or literary sequences and structures.

• They synthesize information that is received or that will be presented, for example in the form of graphic organizers of abstracts.

• Help memorize links and other support elements, interacting verbal memory and iconic memory (illustrated vocabulary).

For all this, but above all because it is very fun and is another way of encouraging reading, I encourage you to read with your children stories with pictogramsThere are many books on the market and you can also see some examples online.
