Next Sunday Diplodocus 'Dippy' replica celebrates his birthday at the National Museum of Natural Sciences

The National Museum of Natural Sciences has organized an exhibition that can be visited until June 2, 2014, and through which the centenary of the arrival of the Diplodocus that is housed there is celebrated. This replica is installed in the Museum since 1913, and the exhibition narrates the circumstances that preceded its arrival, its installation in the museum and the repercussions of the presentation in Madrid.

Visitors will also be able to know which were the dinosaurs that have lived with the Diplodocus during the upper Jurassic in the American far west

The skeleton of Diplodocus Carnegii in a replica of the skeleton known as "Dippy" of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (Pittsburgh, USA). It was donated by Andrew Carnegie to King Alfonso XIII. As in the case of the megatery, its original historical assembly is preserved.

'Dippy' celebrates his birthday on Sunday December 1st with free activities, a scale replica with LEGO pieces, and a recreation of more than 73,000 landscape bricks and Mesozoic sites. You are invited to participate in this event that LEGO, together with the Cultural Association of LEGO Construction Fans of Spain (ALE) have organized. Recreation with LEGO pieces aims to make a chronological journey through the evolution of living beings, from the beginning of the Mesozoic to Prehistory. There will also be scenes from Dippy's history, since it was discovered in the Morrison formation in Wyoming (United States); This recreation will be open to the public from one to December 15. It will house different animals belonging to each of the periods, and all those who go to the Museum to know them, you will recognize the Velociraptor or the Tirannosaurus Rex.

During the whole day of Sunday 1 December different free activities will be organized (previous acquisition of the Museum ticket) so that children can actively participate in Dippy's birthday:

  • Wink workshop with puppets that will stage the life of dinosaurs.

  • Workshop “Put Dinosaur Face” where you can make your own dinosaur mask.

  • Free construction workshop with LEGO parts so that the little ones can pay their particular tribute to Dippy.

  • Race contest with LEGO Chima sets to demonstrate their skills with the animal kingdom.

I am going to anticipate something: within the recreation done with LEGO tokens some “discordant elements” will be hidden with the period represented visitors will have to identify in order to enter the LEGO set draw. And if you can not go next Sunday (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and none of the following 15 days (to visit the recreation with LEGO bricks), you already know that the exhibition will be present in the Museum until June 2 of 2014.

It is a good occasion to visit this commemorative exhibition, which will be completed with a video that will reflect which are the other museums that house the Diplodocus, how their appearance in life was represented and what are the Spanish films in which it appears.
