"Brothers", a tribute to the brothers of people with disabilities

A special relationship is always established between siblings, but it is when one of them has a disability when an incomparable bond is established. The documentary "Brothers" is a tribute to the figure of the brothers of people with disabilities Intellectual or development.

It brings us closer to those family stories on difficult occasions, with children who accompany their siblings and who will continue to do so throughout their lives, with a responsibility and a role that is often not recognized. Stories of young children with siblings who have a disability, but also of adults who have lived with this situation over the years.

The documentary reminds us that we must prevent children from missing information about what happens to their brother, since then the doubts and fears, the gaps in the information make it also more difficult for them to live with their family .

In the end, the summary is that the brothers accompany them throughout their lives: they share children's games, dreams, illusions, songs, quarrels as in any fraternal relationship ... They mediate between parents and siblings, they are complicit in their achievements and failures, they share difficulties and they also firmly defend their brothers' abilities.

Also on many occasions, when time passes, when they stop being children, they take over from their parents in the care of their brother or sister. It is then when they assume a responsibility that must be combined with their life, family, work, personal projects… And also when sometimes having a brother with a disability will change the course of their lives, as one of the protagonists Who decided his profession, being a nurse.

But with the idea that I stay is that, having a brother with a disability makes his family stronger, because you see how they get ahead despite the difficulties and that strengthens anyone. In addition, I would highlight the great love that is seen among the brothers, because it may not be expressed in words, but the looks, the hugs, the kisses, are there.

Also that people with disabilities need a lot of love and attention, that family aid is needed for the day-to-day life of these dependent people, to foster their autonomy ... And that in the end young children see their brother as one of the family, as one more child, but with a very special love.

What happens when a baby arrives in the family and an aunt with a disability is "dethroned"? Does society feel fear or rejection for these people? How do some children, triplets live together, one of whom is blind and has autism, and a sister two years older? What differences are there in the relationship between them?

We leave you with the lives of four different families: Ignacio, Julio, María, Beatriz, Carlos, Berta, Blanca and Cristina. Some are already adults, there are also teenagers and children. They all have a common denominator: they are brothers of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. And this documentary acknowledges all of them.
