The good weather arrives: walks safely

With spring, good weather and longer days, the rides with the kids are more frequent, either in the afternoon, either on weekends, in the city, in the suburbs, in the countryside or by the sea ...

Walking is a great activity that not only makes us feel good physically by activating the body thanks to exercise, but also emotionally, by unloading tensions and having fun with the freedom that gives us outside.

It is not really necessary to take too many precautions to enjoy these walks with children, although it will also depend on their age and where we are going to walk. These are some Safety recommendations for walks with children:

  • Proper clothing: although it is not about doing gymnastic exercises, we are going to walk, probably at a good pace at times, so it is convenient to wear comfortable, loose clothing and fabrics that allow perspiration to the skin. Nor should we forget a jacket because of the temperature changes that may occur.

  • The footwear, fundamental: it is important to wear comfortable sneakers (and cotton socks) to make the walks if they are long and we do not want them to end with chafing. For short walks, daily footwear, which is also comfortable, is fine.

  • Be well hydrated: since I am a mother, a bottle of water always accompanies me, and in the walks with the children there can be no lack of liquids (water, juices) so that they do not thirst, neither they nor we: it will be necessary to get some more bottle).

  • Depending on the duration of the walk, we will take the necessary snacks or meals (and something else "just in case"). We are not going to go with provisions for a regiment, but neither should we go with the right thing, in case the walk is extended or in case of any unforeseen event. Fruits (washed beforehand), snacks, vegetables ... come in handy to regain strength.

  • Solar protection: the days are longer, and the sun burns harder. It is essential a good protective cream that we will apply to children about 30 minutes before being exposed to the sun, on the face and in the uncovered areas (arms, legs ...). If we are going to be outdoors for more than two hours, it is advisable to bring the sunscreen to replace the cream. A cap and sunglasses will complete the protective equipment.

  • In the most conflictive times and hours (after rain, wet areas, in the late afternoon ...) it is advisable to wear protective lotion against mosquitoes. We can also carry anti-sting lotion.

  • If the walk is for an unknown place, you have to make sure before it is suitable for the kids, that it does not represent too much difficulty, that there are no excessive slopes, that it is marked to avoid getting lost ... Internet consultations, maps, guides Or to the knowledgeable people of the place they can guide us.

  • It is also convenient to consult weather forecasts to avoid unpleasant surprises halfway, although we already know that "time" does not always hit the spot ... For children with allergies, it is worth looking at the pages on the level of pollen.

  • By bike: if the ride is on two wheels, let's not forget to circulate with the appropriate equipment and protection, especially the helmet.

  • On roller skates: more and more children are seen on roller skates. The rides on skates should not forget helmet, knee pads, elbow pads ... and a speed appropriate to the skill of the child, as well as constant monitoring and accompaniment.

  • Beware of unknown routes or traffic that may surprise us. We must also be cautious if we cross a road or a busy street on our walk.

  • Breaks: Let's try to make stops, whether children ask for it or not, because many times in the excitement of moving forward they forget about fatigue. Observing some plants, some clouds or doing some sitting games can be a good excuse to rest.

In addition to the safety tips, we remind you how to make the most fun rides precisely at the breaks and at the end of the tour.

  • Outdoor games: playing outdoors is good, beautiful and cheap, and although the walk itself is a great exercise, we can add other physical games, such as the handkerchief, jumps, skipping, circuits ... Not forgetting other games Quiet and relaxed at lunch or snack time.

  • In relation to rest and games, relaxing at the end of the journey will help you rest muscles and prepare for the return home and routine.

  • The next day they will love to draw what they liked most about the trip and review the photos.

They will probably sleep beautifully after having given a great family outing following all safety tips so that there are no unpleasant surprises and enjoy the outdoors in spring. Don't forget the camera!
